Week 6.2 - Hand in

Week 6.2 - Hand-in! These are my final posters! Rationale My topic for my posters was Gender Equality, with focus on equal pay. I opted to use a slice of cake as my concept to illustrate this inequality, colouring the slices to reflect the difference in pay between men and women in New Zealand. I also designed these two poster in different mediums (photographic and illustrative) in order to emphasise my concept and attract a more diverse audience.   In the photographic poster, I opted for a very minimalistic approach, in order to achieve a clean cut design style. I placed the text at the top in the available negative space. For the image, I utilised a photo of my cake with a shallow depth of field, focussing on the pink slice to emphasise the fact that it’s an issue involving women, with the remainder of the cake in the background eluding to the idea that they’re only getting a small cut. Week 6.1

Today's class was a good opportunity to gain some final feedback before hand in. Most of the comments I received from Matt were about refining my type, so I'm going to work hard to achieve that before hand in on Thursday.  The feedback for the illustrative poster was to question if the coffee cup was necessary and whether or not i could extend the type down the left hand column. For the photographic poster it was repositioning the rectangle so as to not interfere too much with the image and revise the type in the bottom centre.

Week 5.2

Week 5.2 This week consisted of a lot of baking in order to ensure I could back a cake so that it looked just right. The below photos are me during the process of icing the cake. I was really pleased with how both the cake and the photos came out (see below) It also encouraged me to want to go in a slightly different visual direction to what I had initially been planning.

Week 5.1

Week 5.1 - Interim Presentation. After being sick last week, I was excited to see the way in which everyone developed their posters and to gain some valuable feedback on my own. I found the feedback I received on these posters to be quite good, they recognised the fact I needed to recreate my cake in order to gain a better quality image and the majority of the work needed seemed to be focussed around the yellow poster.

Week 4.2

Week 4.2 This week I focussed on using the cake I had baked and developing iterations for our second interim presentation on Monday. As I was sick this week, I wasn't in class, so I designed these posters at home. One major focus that I had in designing these was looking at high contrasting colour for the background as well as the layout for the text. I finally narrowed it down to this type as the type I liked the best I then asked fellow classmates which coloured background they thought was more impactful, which left me with the yellow poster for my interim presentation

Week 4.1

After talking with Matt during last class, I established that I needed to use the same concept but convey it through different solutions, this lead me to think about the option of photography. I was inspired by the impactful nature of the following works by t he French duo Thomas and Quentin of graphic design practice   Studio Furious: I was intrigued by how the pair used colour to convey their intentions in their works and wondered if I could try a similar aesthetic in my own. Week 3.2

Week 3.2 Today's class was an in class critique, this was a good opportunity to gain feedback on four of our posters.  The posters I chose to gain feedback on were:     Overall, I found the feedback I gained to be extremely limited with very few of the boxes being filled.  However, after speaking with Matt I gained more direction on where I can head with my posters over the coming weeks. He acknowledged that the cake poster is probably the  most successful, but that he also saw potential in the "show us your bucks" poster, however not with the same imagery. He advised me to really look into what imagery could work with it. He also saw potential in the barbie poster but said I would have to look into how I could make 2 posters out of it.  He also suggested to the whole class that our posters should be potentially in two different mediums eg. illustration and photographic.
