Week 3.1

Week 3.1 During today's class I sat down with Matt and discussed all of my work to date and what posters I could create before the interim presentation. Together we discussed the idea of dividing my boob cake poster (see below) into two seperate posters as he felt it was trying to convey too many ideas all in one go. This lead me to think about the two ways in which I could create these new posters to ensure they effectively got my point across.

Week 2.2

This week in class, we took time in groups to brainstorm ways in which we could narrow down subject matter, these were the different brainstorms:          I decided to primarily focus on the sub-categories of gender as this is my chosen topic. After doing this brainstorm, it made me consider which issue I was most affected by and therefore the most passionate about. This pushed me further into researching the gender pay gap in NZ I then discovered this article:  http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/BU1703/S00252/nz-women-at-risk-because-of-gender-discrimination.htm It is filled to the brim with facts and information that was all relevant to gender inequality in the work force. This lead me to then choosing a fact which I then had to create a poster from, the line I chose was: "New Zealand women earn 12% less than their male counterparts" This shocked me as I thought we were a country on top of all inequality issues, but this mad...

Week 2.1

Week 2.1 Today in class we needed to have brought along an article to discuss in regards to our chosen subject matter. I opted for both a New Zealand Herald article and a stuff article, both of which discussed many of the ways in which men and women are not considered equals, particularly in the working environment. This lead me to realise the number of sub-categories there are in regards to gender inequality and made me consider which issue I was most passionate about. My initial thought is that I'm leaning towards the idea of equal pay.  We also got tasked in class to design posters based off a single phrase. The phrase I opted to use was "A piece of cake" In this piece the rhetoric I chose to use was juxtaposition as I combined the idea of boobs and a cake to create a single image. This was the result:

Week 1.2

Week 1.2 Today we were a able to vote on the first 10 best posters and decide which we thought should stay and which should go. I thought some of those designs we brilliant and made me think about how I could most effectively convey my message in a minimalistic manner.  INSERT IMAGES In class we brainstormed different types of inequalities, this made me think harder about which type of inequality I was the most passionate about, having never really felt any type of discrimination. I think I am leaning towards gender inequalities. INSERT IMAGES In class we were also given a words and in the space of 15 minutes were were challenged with sketching 10 poster concepts based on that word.  INSERT IMAGES When attempting to design posters for the word "match" I brainstormed the many different meanings and associations with the word, trying to think broadly before sketching. INSERT IMAGES Personally I felt this was the most eff...

Week 1.1

Week 1.1 This week we were introduced to our new project poster design.  The first class was about introducing the topic of inequalities in New Zealand. In order to broaden the way in which we crafted these posters, we started with a seemingly irrelevant game of pictionary. We then heard a lecture from various guest speakers discussing several inequalities in NZ. I was immediately intrigued by both gender inequality and wealth inequality.  INSERT IMAGES At the end of class, we are told we are to craft a poster from one of our illustrations, focussing only on type and colour. I found this interesting as when viewing a poster I am usually drawn most to the visual. However, I feel this exercise encourages us to craft our type in a way that makes it eye-catching and exciting.  INSERT IMAGES
